Kitaro được xem là một kiến trúc sư của dòng nhạc New Age. Khi được hỏi về sáng tác của mình, Kitaro trả lời: Tôi chưa bao giờ được dạy dỗ gì về nhạc. Tôi chỉ học cách tin vào đôi tai và những cảm xúc của bản thân mình. (..) Những bản nhạc ko xuất phát từ tâm trí tôi. Chúng đến từ trời cao, đi xuyên qua thân thể tôi rồi qua tay thoát ra ngoài. Đôi lúc tôi cũng ngẩn ngơ. Tôi ko tập dượt. Tôi ko đọc, viết nhạc. Chỉ là những ngón tay tôi chuyển động. Tôi cũng tự hỏi, nhạc này của ai thế nhỉ ? Tôi viết ra, nhưng chúng ko phải là nhạc của tôi. Nhiều người gọi nhạc của ông là nhạc tâm linh - spirit music.
